How to present yourself professionally on the day
Your goal is to show the potential employer that you are the best candidate. Here are some tips about how to dress and behave at the interview to maximise your chance of being chosen.
Dress well, arrive early: Be on time. Dress conservatively and be well groomed – a good first impression is crucial. Shake hands firmly and smile. Remember the interviewer’s name and use it in your responses. Be respectful and polite.
Good posture and voice: Sit up straight, be alert and confident, look into your interviewer’s eyes at all times, speak in an assured voice and show enthusiasm and responsiveness – employers appreciate these qualities.
Always reply relevantly: Answer questions directly and forthrightly, and be brief. Do your homework about the company before the interview so that you can ask relevant questions about the position and the business – it shows that you are serious and interested.
Questions you can ask: You are entitled to ask about any aspect of the job – your responsibilities, the management structure, what they seek in an employee, likely challenges in the job, the company’s strengths and standing in its field.
Be ready to answer well: You can be asked about your accomplishments, goals and academic record. Questions often focus on your understanding of the position, what you see as the opportunities and challenges. They could ask how you would select, motivate or discipline subordinates, as well as asking about your strengths and weaknesses.
Show initiative: If the interview’s gone well and you want the job – ask for it. It shows that you’re interested and can help close the sale for you. Also ask whether the interviewer would like to meet you again, and write the interviewer a thank-you note next day – this is rare, and appreciated.
